About Ideal Weight Formulas

Ideal body weight formulas were originally developed for clinical use in medicine to help determine appropriate drug dosages and nutritional requirements. The four most widely cited formulas — Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi — were each published between 1964 and 1983, and they tend to agree within a few pounds for most heights. To complement this, our Healthy Weight Calculator uses BMI thresholds to provide a range rather than a single target.

No single formula is universally "best." Each was derived from different study populations and uses slightly different base weights and increments per inch above 5 feet. Athletes with high muscle mass, older adults who have lost bone density, and people with very short or very tall stature may find these estimates less applicable to them. Pairing this tool with a BMI Calculator and Body Fat Calculator gives a more complete picture of body composition.

These results are for informational purposes only and are not a substitute for professional medical advice. A healthcare provider can assess your individual health status, body composition, and goals to recommend a healthy target weight appropriate for you.
