About the Data Storage Converter

Storage manufacturers generally use decimal SI prefixes: 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. Operating systems and memory tools often use binary IEC prefixes: 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. This converter labels KB/MB/GB/TB and KiB/MiB/GiB/TiB separately so a capacity is never silently interpreted under the wrong standard.

Bits are useful for network rates, while bytes describe files and disks. Convert a value live—for example, 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes while 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes—then use the Numbers Converter when you need to inspect the underlying integer in binary or hexadecimal. For duration estimates, the Time Converter can help put a file transfer into context.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between GB and GiB?

GB is decimal and equals 1,000,000,000 bytes; GiB is binary and equals 1,073,741,824 bytes.

How many bits are in a byte?

One byte contains exactly eight bits.

Why does a drive show less space than its label?

Manufacturers use decimal capacities while some operating systems display binary-sized values with familiar decimal labels, making the displayed number look smaller.
