About Sleep Cycles

Sleep is structured in repeating 90-minute cycles, each consisting of lighter sleep stages (N1, N2), deep slow-wave sleep (N3), and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Waking up in the middle of a deep sleep stage causes sleep inertia — that groggy, disoriented feeling that can last 30–60 minutes. By timing your wake-up to fall at the end of a complete 90-minute cycle, you minimize sleep inertia and wake up feeling more alert and refreshed. This calculator also accounts for the average 15 minutes it takes most people to fall asleep after lying down.

Most adults need 7–9 hours of sleep per night (roughly 5–6 cycles), though individual needs vary. Consistently getting fewer than 6 hours (4 cycles) impairs cognitive function, immune response, and metabolic health over time. Sleep quality is closely linked to exercise and diet — tracking your energy expenditure with our TDEE Calculator and monitoring exercise intensity with our Target Heart Rate Calculator can help you build habits that support better sleep.
