About Standard Deviation

Standard deviation is a measure of how spread out numbers are from their mean. A low standard deviation means data points are clustered close to the mean, while a high standard deviation indicates data is spread over a wider range.

Population vs. Sample

Use the population standard deviation (σ) when your data represents the entire population. Use the sample standard deviation (s) when your data is a sample drawn from a larger population — it uses N−1 (Bessel's correction) to provide an unbiased estimate of the population variance.

Practical Uses

Standard deviation is fundamental in statistics, finance (measuring volatility), quality control (Six Sigma processes), and scientific research. It helps compare variability between different datasets and is a key component of the normal distribution, z-scores, and confidence intervals.
