About the Army Body Fat Calculator
The US Army uses Army Regulation 600-9 (The Army Body Composition Program) to set body fat standards for active duty soldiers. Soldiers who exceed the weight screening table limits are subject to body fat assessment using the circumference-based formula — the same US Navy method used in our Body Fat Calculator. The Army does not use DEXA scans or hydrostatic weighing for routine screening; instead, trained personnel take circumference measurements at standardized sites.
For male soldiers, measurements are taken at the neck and abdomen (at the navel level). For female soldiers, measurements also include the hip at the greatest protrusion. Height is measured without shoes. The resulting body fat percentage is then compared against the age- and gender-specific standards in AR 600-9. Soldiers who fail the body fat assessment are enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP) and must show a reduction of at least 1% per month. Failure to meet standards within the required time can result in separation from service.
If you're working to reduce body fat to meet Army standards, consider pairing this tool with a Calorie Calculator to manage your nutrition, and a BMI Calculator to track your overall weight status. Note that this calculator provides an estimate; official Army assessments must be conducted by qualified personnel following specific protocols outlined in AR 600-9.
