About Averages and Statistics

The word "average" most commonly refers to the arithmetic mean — the sum of all values divided by the count. However, statisticians use several measures of central tendency: mean, median, and mode each describe the "center" of a dataset differently. Choosing the right measure depends on the distribution of your data.

Mean, Median, and Mode

The mean is sensitive to outliers — a few extremely large or small values can pull it away from the "typical" value. The median (middle value in sorted order) is more robust to outliers, which is why household income is often reported as median income. The mode is the most frequent value and is most useful for categorical or discrete data.

Range and Spread

The range (max − min) measures how spread out the data is. A large range with a small set of data can be misleading. More sophisticated measures of spread include variance and standard deviation, which account for how far each value deviates from the mean. Understanding spread is just as important as understanding the center when analyzing data.
