About Base64 Encoding
Base64 is a binary-to-text encoding scheme that represents binary data using 64 printable ASCII characters (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, +, /). It's widely used to encode binary data for transmission over text-based protocols like email (MIME), HTTP, and embedding images in HTML/CSS as data URLs. For other encoding tasks, see our URL Encoder/Decoder for percent-encoding web addresses.
Base64-encoded data is approximately 33% larger than the original binary because every 3 bytes of input produce 4 characters of output. Padding characters (=) are added when the input length is not a multiple of 3. When working with sensitive data, remember that Base64 is encoding, not encryption — for secure credentials, use our Password Generator to create cryptographically secure passwords.
