About URL Encoding

URL encoding (percent-encoding) replaces unsafe or reserved characters in URLs with a "%" followed by two hexadecimal digits representing the character's UTF-8 byte value. For example, a space becomes %20, and an ampersand (&) becomes %26. This ensures URLs are transmitted correctly over the internet without ambiguity. For another common encoding format, try our Base64 Encoder/Decoder.

Reserved characters like /, ?, #, &, and = have special meaning in URL syntax and must be encoded when they appear in query string values. The JavaScript encodeURIComponent() function encodes all characters except letters, digits, and the unreserved marks (-, _, ., !). This is the recommended function for encoding individual URL components. For secure password management alongside your web development work, our Password Generator creates cryptographically strong passwords.
