Measure one straight open run. Enter panel width and any gate opening; the remaining run divided by panel width is rounded up to a whole panel. The editable starting width is only an example: use your product’s actual panel width. Check how partial panels will fit before purchasing.
Posts are shared at adjacent panel joints rather than counted twice. For a single continuous open run this estimate uses panels + 1 posts, and adds one post when there is a gate (two gate posts shared with neighboring panels). For a rectangular or other multi-sided fence, estimate each straight side separately: simply dividing total perimeter by panel width can undercount panels where corners interrupt the layout. Account for shared corner posts when totaling sides.

Frequently asked questions
Are posts shared between adjacent panels?
Yes. A continuous open run uses one post at each end and one shared post per panel joint. One gate adds a second gate-side post.
Can the gate be wider than the run?
No. The gate opening cannot exceed the total fence run, and its width is removed before panel count is calculated.
Can I calculate a closed rectangular fence?
Estimate each straight side separately so partial panels at corners are counted correctly, then account for shared corner posts. The calculator estimates one open run at a time.
